International Master Michael Basman was renowned as the most imaginative chess player of his era. In addition to his remarkable achievements on the board, such as winning the British Chess Championship in 1973, he devoted himself to inspiring countless British children to embrace the joys of chess. He accomplished this through the creation of the UK Chess Challenge (est. 1996), a nationwide tournament he tirelessly organized for over two decades.
Sadly, Mike passed away in 2022. Today, we come together to commemorate "Basmania," his unparalleled ability to infuse chess theory and openings with whimsy. His distinctive approach breathed vitality into the sometimes austere world of chess, fostering creativity and laughter with every move.
